Dance Dress Code:
APA has a required dress code for dance students. The dress code, found below, outlines the different leotard options – with each age group wearing a different color! These can be paired with fitted shorts, pants, or skirts, if you choose.

For Summer & Six Week Sessions: During summer or a 6 week mini session, the dress code is relaxed! Dancers may wear any clothes comfortable to move around in, with socks, or ballet shoes, or clean gym shoes.

Can I purchase my own leotard if it’s the right color?
We want all students to purchase their leotards in-house at APA. Doing so helps ensure uniformity in color, quality, and fit, which is essential for a cohesive look both in class and for performances. What do Hip Hop students wear?
Hip Hop students do not wear leotards, they have their own dress code seen on the guide above.
Do boys need to wear leotards for non-hip hop classes?
No, boys have a separate dress code – see the guide above!
What shoes for Poms?
Poms students wear jazz shoes.
What do Competitive students wear?
-Dress Code for ballet class: hair in a bun, solid black leo, pink tights (can be convertible but must be pulled down over the feet), ballet shoes, and the hip alignment belt corresponding to dancer’s level.
-Dress Code for Team Rehearsals: hair in a bun, solid black leo, tan tights (an appropriate style), and proper shoes. Technique classes for Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Poms may wear black form fitting shorts or leggings according to style and coach preference. Each coach may enforce what they feel is appropriate. If rehearsal is before or after a dancer’s ballet class, ballet dress code must still be followed in ballet class.
-Competitive students should wear the appropriate age-based color if/when in recreational classes.
Are leggings allowed?
Black leggings are NOT part of the dress code unless it is for Hip Hop. Dancers may wear a black skirt or shorts.
Acro classes have several age groups – what color do they wear?
Acro classes may have students of various ages, resulting in different color leos. Please wear the color corresponding to your age group.
Additional Dress Codes
Technique & Team Classes:
Leveled Technique Ballet Classes: Hair in a bun, solid black leotard, pink tights (can be convertible but must be pulled down over the feet), ballet shoes, and the hip alignment belt corresponding to dancer’s level.
Leveled Technique Classes and Competitive Team Rehearsals: Hair in a bun, solid black leotard, tan tights, and appropriate shoes. Fitted, solid black shorts or pants above the ankle are allowed in classes/rehearsals. Ponytails are permitted in tap and hip hop classes only. Each instructor may enforce what they feel is appropriate given the choreography, time spent each class adjusting hair, etc.
Note: If class/rehearsal is before or after dancer’s ballet class, ballet dress code must still be followed in ballet class.
Assistant Dress Code:
Black “assistant” t-shirt, hair in a bun, tights (pink or tan) pulled down over feet, and appropriate shoes. Approved long sleeve cover-ups and solid black fitted shorts or black ballet skirts (no shorts in ballet, skirts ONLY in ballet) are allowed. Hair in a ponytail may be allowed with prior approval (class-dependent).
Do not wear your dance shoes outside, please change them before and after class. Hair must be up and out of your face. No gum or eating in the classroom. No cell phones! Teens – you may wear sports bras under your leotard, no regular bras, please. Dance Costumes are not appropriate dance attire for class!
Keeping in line with our modesty promise, we do not allow midriff-baring attire during APA classes.
