The weather is warming, flowers are blooming and summer is just around the corner.
Memorial Day is the unofficial kick-off to the season and we have 5 activities that are perfect for the family to enjoy over the long weekend. Crafts that will make your backyard barbeque extra special, sweet treats you can make together with the family, and fun ways to take time to remember and learn about the holiday’s history.
Popsicle Stick American Flag
This craft is PERFECT for kids of all ages and is sure to add a festive flair to your backyard barbeque! All you need is popsicle sticks, wood glue, patriotic paint colors and glitter (for extra sparkle!) Take one popsicle stick to be the handle and use 4 others to make the flag. Use the wood glue and adhere the 4 popsicle sticks to the handle and allow time to dry. Next, paint the flag with red, white, and blue colors either to match the American flag or let kids get creative and make their own pattern. Lastly, dust with glitter and dry before displaying in your yard for all to enjoy!
Take A Moment To Remember
Memorial Day commemorates soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Spend time with the family and take a moment to remember those men and women and learn about the holidays’ history. Did you know that Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day? Or that the Poppy flower is the symbol for the holiday? Learning about the heritage of Memorial Day can help create new ways to celebrate for years to come.
Make A Sweet Treat!
These delicious pretzel rods are easy to make, fun for the kiddos to help decorate, and a crowd-pleaser at parties! All you need is your favorite brand of pretzel rods, patriotic frosting, and decorative sprinkles. Melt the frosting in separate bowls, one for each color. Dip pretzel rods in the red, white, and blue frosting and cover half the pretzel. Make it fun and drizzle different colors, add festive sprinkles and get creative! Once finished decorating, place in the fridge until frosting sets, and enjoy!
Red, White, and Blue Scavenger Hunt (FREE Printable!)
A great activity for the kids and a fun icebreaker at the family barbeque! This Red, White, and Blue Scavenger Hunt is a race against the clock to find each item on the list before time runs out. Divide into teams, depending on the size of your family or party, set the timer anywhere between 5- 10 minutes. The less time you have, the greater the challenge! The first team to find all 10 items wins!

Painted Lawn Stars
An easy and fun way to decorate your yard without having to worry about the clean-up! All you need is 3 pieces of cardboard in various sizes, patriotic color water-based spray paint, 1 expo cutter, and a Sharpie marker. Using the marker, draw stars on all three pieces of cardboard. Carefully use the expo cutter and follow the lines of each star, cutting out the center and creating a stencil. Place the stencil on the grass, select your spray paint color and fill in the stencil completely, making sure to hold the stencil firm to the ground. Once completely filled in, remove the stencil for a perfect STAR! Continue this process using the 3 different sizes of stencils and create a fun yard decoration that can be mowed away after the holiday.
All of us at APA hope that you have a wonderful Memorial Day and that these activities help make the weekend a little extra special!
