Summer is in full swing and temperatures are rising!
The 4th of July weekend was just the START to humid days under the hot sun! In Wisconsin, we try to soak up every second of the summer weather, but on days when the temperature is too high, how can we enjoy the outdoors safely?
We’ve found 5 great and easy ways to beat the heat this summer, while still having FUN in the sun! Tips for keeping kids safe, fun ways to hydrate, and creative DIY games that are sure to allow your family to enjoy all that summer has to offer!
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
This is always easier said than done when it comes to kids. Water is not always their first choice when it comes to beverages. So how do we get them to hydrate? Make it magic! Have a selection of fresh fruit such as strawberries, kiwi, lemons, or blueberries for kids to choose from. Add ice and water to a pitcher and ask your child to choose their FAVORITE fruits to add to the “potion” and mix! When kids help in the kitchen they are more likely and EXCITED to try new foods and recipes.
Keep Cool with Frozen Foods
And we’re not just talking about indulging in ice cream treats! There are a LOT of healthy and nutritious snacks that will keep you fueled and hydrated at the same time. Make your own flavor of popsicle fruit bars or start the day with a refreshing and chilled smoothie! Another great snack is yogurt-covered berries. Just coat, freeze, and enjoy while splashing around the pool.
Time Indoors Well Spent
Some days it won’t matter what we do, the kids just don’t want to be outside in the heat. So rather than spending the day on screens, head to an indoor activity that’s both FUN and EDUCATIONAL! Take a trip to Betty Brinn Children’s Museum, head over to the planetarium for a tour of the solar system, or stop at your local library for an afternoon of reading. Short adventures to take a break from the heat, but still enjoy time together.
Creative Ways to Cool Off
We all know that pulling out the pool, splashing down the slip n’ slide, or cooling off with the sprinkler are sure-fire ways to stay chill. However, there are TONS of fun activities that will help keep cool while entertaining your little ones. Create a Dino Excavation by taking toy dinos and freezing them in ice cube trays. Mix equal parts of salt and water to have kids pour over the iced dinos. Watch the magic of science as the cubes begin to melt! Ice cubes also make the perfect supplies for kids to build their own Igloo!
Make the Most of Early morning & Evening hours
The hottest part of the day is between 11:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. so some activities are best to do early in the morning or in the evening after dinner. The playground is a great summer adventure, but equipment becomes hot and potentially dangerous once exposed to direct sunlight for a long time. Nature trails can be much more enjoyable with the cool morning breeze, as opposed to a humid afternoon walk. And let’s not forget about family bike rides that everyone will enjoy under the setting sun. If your activity takes place during the hottest part of the day, be prepared with water to hydrate, spray bottles to cool off, and plenty of sunscreens!
Wisconsin summers are by far one of the most enjoyable seasons and we hope this helps your family beat the heat and delight in all that summer has to offer!
