Helping Your Child Set Music Goals for the New Year

After the busy holiday season winds down and winter concerts wrap up, it’s the perfect moment to pause, reflect, and reset. January is a great time for students to set music goals (or “resolutions”)—and parents play an important role in helping them get started!

Here’s an easy, positive way you can help your musician reflect and plan for the year ahead.

We’re Here to Support You

Step 1: Celebrate the Wins

Start by looking back at the winter concert.

If you or a family member recorded the performance, sit down together and watch it. Encourage your child to watch with a kind and thoughtful eye.

Ask questions like:

  • What did you do really well?
  • Did you keep going even if something didn’t go perfectly?
  • How was your expression, confidence, or focus?

This step is important! Noticing strengths builds confidence and helps students feel proud of their hard work.

Step 2: Gently Notice Areas to Improve

Next comes the growth piece—but remind your child this is not about being overly critical.

Together, identify just a few small things they could improve:

  • Posture
  • Dynamics (loud/soft contrast)
  • Expression
  • Accuracy or consistency

Even the most advanced musicians always have room to grow. Improvement happens one small step at a time!

Step 3: Turn Reflections into Clear Goals

Now it’s time to turn ideas into realistic, achievable goals.

Instead of: “Practice more”

Try:

  • “Practice 4 days a week”
  • “Practice right after homework”
  • “Work toward performing this song at the next concert”

Helpful tip:

If your child doesn’t already have one, a music notebook is a great tool to bring to lessons. Teachers can write weekly goals, and students can track progress over time—it’s very motivating to see growth!

Step 4: Share Goals with the Music Teacher

Encourage your child to share their goals with their APA music teacher. Teachers can help:

  • Break goals into manageable steps
  • Suggest practice strategies
  • Choose music that keeps students motivated

This teamwork makes a big difference!

Step 5: Keep Goals Visible

Once goals are written:

  • Place them in a planner or music notebook
  • Review them regularly
  • Celebrate progress along the way

Small reminders help students stay focused and motivated throughout the year.

Looking Ahead

With realistic goals, consistent support at home, and guidance from their APA music teacher, your child will be well on their way to becoming an even more confident and successful musician in 2025!

Thank you for supporting your student’s musical journey—we couldn’t do it without you
