Team Newsletter – April 2019

One of our favorite events is our Father/Dancer Dance, performed at our June Showcases.  This is a free event and we hope to get as many Dads as possible involved!  (If Dad isn’t available, feel free to invite your Uncle, Grandpa, etc.)  We will have free classes at APA for you to bring Dad and learn the dance AND we will send out the video link in the May Newsletter for you to learn on your own.  More details to come in our May Newsletter.

We hope everyone has a Happy Easter & enjoys their Spring Break!

APA Competitive Student of the Month:  Congratulations Xiomara Martinez, our Competitive Team Dancer of the Month. Xiomara is in 6th grade at Carmen South Middle School where her favorite subject is Math. Xiomara loves the color purple. Xiomara’s favorite food is spaghetti and favorite dessert is strawberry cake. She enjoys using the app snapchat. Xiomara would like to become a lawyer when she is older. Her personal hero is Frida Kahlo. She has been dancing at APA for 5 years and this is her second year on Competitive Teams. Xiomara’s favorite style of dance is Lyrical, her favorite memory is receiving Team awards, and dance has taught her to never give up.  Xiomara has been nominated because she is a dedicated worker and a very helpful and supportive teammate. Her leadership skills don’t go unnoticed. She constantly wants to improve her craft and always asks for ways to improve, corrections and then applies them. Xiomara always comes to class prepared and ready to give it her all. Those around her always appreciate her kindness. Congratulations Xiomara!

Spring Break for BOTH Locations:  April 19th – April 25th.   We will have class on Friday, April 26th AND Saturday, April 27th due to parent requests from years prior.

Friday and Saturday Rehearsals & Classes:  Friday, April 26th and Saturday, April 27th are the last rehearsals before the next competition. All students must attend to be able to participate at the Rainbow Competition the following weekend unless you made prior arrangements via response to the email sent in January. *Based on previous schedules from Rainbow schedule, there will most likely be class that Friday evening for the Poms Teams (most of the time, but not always, solos and duos go on Friday nights so teams would still have class). In that case, Friday April 12th would be the rehearsal prior that you’d need to be sure to attend… HOWEVER, without a schedule we cannot guarantee that so you should not plan to miss on April 26th.

EXTRA Performance Opportunity: We have a time slot for some solo, duo/trio performances at the Southridge Mall on Saturday, June 1st from 3-4pm! If you are interested in getting a fun, community performance in, please email [email protected] by April 8th as we need to inform the Mall Event Coordinator of our numbers and changing needs. Miss Sarah would be interested in taking some of our smaller groups (who also use smaller space) if they were all available and willing (Pre-Team Jazz, any of the Tap Teams, etc.). There will be a yes/no list at rehearsal classes this week.

Showcase days and times:  The dates and times for all leveled technique ballet classes as well as all Team routines are listed below.

Upcoming Production Rehearsal dates and times:  All rehearsals will be from 8-10am at the Oak Creek Studio.  April 13th, May 11th, and June 1st

We will not announce our Teams until after our Spring Showcase. In addition to our audition days, we will also be getting feedback from teachers regarding student’s classes, rehearsals, attendance records and any behavioral issues to help us pick our Teams. Auditions for returning team members and current studio members will be by pre-registration only.

Competitive Team Performance: Tuesday, June 11th @ SMPAC – doors open at 6:30pm, show starts at 7pm. NEW this year – our Competitive Teams will not rehearse Team numbers during the week. Instead they’ll perform on stage Tuesday night to try another approach to the annual Competitive Team Performance, BUT they will also dance in the various weekend Showcases as well. Tickets will go on sale through the SMPAC in May along with our other showcase tickets (ticket sale details for APA’s yearly showcases are at the bottom of the Newsletter).

Communication: As stated in the Team contract and at parent meetings, any communication through private accounts or personal phone numbers will not be addressed. All parents and staff must use official channels. Trisha can be emailed at [email protected]  If there is an emergency during a competition weekend, please post on the Team Facebook page AND the Team App via Chat. Reminder: though it may be tempting, avoid posting excessively or asking several questions on the chat as everyone receives that notification each time.

Competition Feedback/Pointers for a Smooth Season:

~Parents: If your child has a costume change it is your responsibility to have a Mom, Sister or female guardian go to the dressing room area to help them get changed.  This is not the responsibility of a Team assistant or Team coach – they do their best to help but have other responsibilities and timelines to manage as well.

~Reminder: Call time means hair done, make up done, costume and shoes on so that the dancer is ready to run through that routine(s). Students are expected to be situated in the dressing room prior to this time, and to have already warmed up their bodies for healthy dancing. “Call time” is a performance industry term for when one needs to be “ready to work.”

~Dancers: You may have multiple routines to run at a specific call time – we know this and purposely booked them this way to allow ample time for the other members in your group and also your coach. You should NOT expect to meet with your first Team and stay with them until you perform that routine… your other routine will need you as well. It does require some time management and leaving one of the Teams for a bit but that is already understood and expected by coaches.

~Eating at competitions: We cannot control the schedule and flow of the competition, and we base call times off how long in advance we need to begin running for stage and also accounting for dancers and coaches with multiple Teams in a close time span. Meals and snacks must be managed around call times; dancers are not allowed to disperse after their call time because we may not find them all again in time to go on stage. Please prepare ahead of time – look at call times, expected performance times, and award sessions and plan for when you can get snacks or meals for them (or they can get themselves).

**We know there can be a lot going on during competition weekends (your coaches have been there as students too), and there are sometimes many unknowns until the moments before or even of… but we must continue to treat each other with respect and understanding. We want to help you as much as possible, but APA staff are fielding the entire studio’s questions, conflicts, last minute issues – that adds up and it’s a long day(s) for us too! We cannot control scheduling, competition companies make their own errors as well, and we have the best interest of each Team as a whole to consider – we CAN try to make the best of the weekend, take care of any unexpected events one by one, and enjoy the experience as a united studio!**

KAR Pictures and Videos: Don’t forget – for the KAR and Rainbow competitions your additional $25 fee paid for all of your dancer’s pictures and videos of their dances.  If you haven’t already done so, go to https://dancekar.com/parent-center and log into your personal parent portal OR create one if you have not yet done so.

2019 Nationals Information: We would like to Congratulate all the Teams, Soloists, and Duets who competed at the Legacy Dance Competition!  All routines qualified for the Nationals competition! In March an email was sent out with the details.  Please see below.

Payments for National fees will be due Thursday May 9th. The cost is $52 per Team routine. Please pay via check or cash by May 8th if you do not want to use your account on file. If you choose to pay via credit card or your account on file there is a 3% processing fee.

Solos and Duets, it is optional if you choose to attend.  Please email Trisha at [email protected] to let us know if you are going to be performing at Nationals by April 15th.  You will still need to pay by May 9th, but this allows us to register every dance ahead of time.

The cost for a solo is $130 each and the Duets are $77.50 per person.

Dates: June 23rd – June 28th

Location: Wilderness Resort, Wisconsin Dells

We are very excited to see all of our Teams at the Legacy Nationals in the Wisconsin Dells. It’s a high- energy experience and packed with amazing dances! Nationals is divided into levels just as Regionals is, so your dancer will compete under the same categories they did at this past Legacy competition.

We have had many parents who completed the google form for the Team Parent Directory. If you would like to arrange car pooling or other arrangements please click here to access the Team Parent Directory.

If you would like to add your information to the Team Parent Directory please click here.

Fall Schedule – If your student is enrolling in our competitive program again next year, please wait to register for TECHNIQUE, REHEARSAL & ACRO classes until AFTER auditions. We will hold spots for Acro students.

Summer and Fall Dance Assistant Applications: If your child is going to be 10 years old by September 1st and is interested in assisting dance classes this summer and/or next school year, please click below to complete an assistant application.  All summer applications are due no later than May 31st.  For every 2 hours a week of summer class they assist for the summer session, they will receive a $61 credit for fall classes, if they assist all 6 weeks.

Fall Applications will be available in the June newsletter. Since we will need to know your dance schedule prior to giving your availability, the deadline will be after Team results come out. Please keep in mind the more flexibility and availability you have, the easier it is to schedule. Please make sure to review each application as there have been changes.  Any assistant who commits to assisting a minimum of 1 class at the Franklin location will get priority scheduling.

Parent Observation Week May 6th – 11th We invite parents to come and sit in the classroom to see what your child has been working on in all dance and music classes. We will have enough chairs for each child to bring 2 people. If you choose to bring Grandma or Grandpa please be ready to bring in additional chairs. If you have a younger child that can be disruptive to the class, please watch outside of the classroom through our observation windows. Rehearsal classes are still closed during Parent Observation Week.

Questions about Teams or Auditions Next Year? Miss Trisha, our Competitive Team Coordinator, will be at the Oak Creek studio on Saturday April 27th from 9am – 11am to answer any questions that you may have. Miss Trisha can answer questions on the administrative aspect of being on teams – hours, fees, time and financial commitments. Placement and a dancer’s ability would be questions for their coaches and/or Miss Sarah.
